Synthesis about Modernism.
Modernism is the period which developed between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20ieth century.
It developed as a reaction to the Victorian age.
The period was characterized from a lot of tensions between European countries. In reaction of the end of British power, caused by the effects of the First World War, more alliances were born. One of them was the alliance between URSS and USA. They became the strongest world powers. At the end of the first World War a lot of lands were destroyed and people lost their faith in democracy and in the idea of progress which was on the base of the Victorian society. As a matter of fact Modern Age did not share with ethical and artistic principles of the Victorian Age, because modernism did not believe in God and lost its faith in Utilitarianism and in progress: the most important values of the Victorian Age.
During modernism there was a religion crisis. People in reaction at Darwin's discoveries and Nice's philosophical ideas finished to believe in God.
There was also an artistic crisis. As a matter of fact the art of the Modernism had no utilitarian aim as the art of the Victorian Age.
In conclusion man during Modernism had to try to find the meaning of life itself. People this is reflected in literature with the new narrative techniques.
As for as literature there were some changes. As a matter of fact writers there were all middle – aged and one of their changes was reducing to a minimum plot.
They introduced new narrative techniques. They were the interior monologue, the stream of consciousness and the shift of point of view.
