SUMMING UP THE MODERN AGE

ECONOMY

Britain was loosing its supremacy because of the modernization of some other countries. Some Nations felt the need to create alliances to be prepared if a conflict will happen. That moment finally came with the First World war.  It destroyed men's confidence in liberal democracy, capitalism and the idea of progress.

The war signed the end of European domination of the world. As a consequence of the Economic depression (1870s - 1880s) the working class understands that the State must control the economy of the country and it should provide poorer people support (Welfare State). Working class parties also believed what Marx said in The Communist Manifesto: the power had not to be within the middle classes.

RELIGION

Modern people did not believe in God's existence and they understood that they have to find a sense of their own life. If God doesn't exist, moral teaches are not believable.

LITERATURE

Before the Modern period the point of reference was different: God was responsible of what happens on Earth; the omniscient narrator couldn't exist because only God could dominate/know people's mind.

Now the writer is not only in characters' mind, he/she uses also the shift of point of view because the narrator is not important.

Moreover there is not a moral judgement by the narrator, is the reader that is demanding to judge events.

GEOMETRY/PHISICS

Science discovered that its assumptions stood on false or not tested implications.

Which is the most important consequence? Space and time cannot be considered separately.

PHILOSOPHY

Time is:        -    Cronogical (Mathematics)

-          Philosophycal (the sense of time people perceive)

-          Verbe tense (Literature)

Present is conceived as the sum of memories of the past and expectation of the future.

Our mind perceives simultaneity: time exists because the simultaneous existence of past and present exists.
