PRIFACE TO LYRICAL BALLADS
The extract is taken from the preface witch is generally considered the manifest of Romanticism.
It is a text of literary criticism where W. Wordsworth explains what the new form of poetry should be like.
In the text he says that the object, the home of the poetry should be to make the incidents of common life interesting.
Poetry should deal with situations from simple rustic life and this should be transfigure by imagination.
The reason for his reference for humble life follows from the assumption that man are better than when cloven to nature because they are far from the artificialities of civilization because the feeling of country people develop naturally and without restraint are uncomplicated lasting and influence by nature.
Poetry should use familiar, simple language (the language really used by man) because amble country people live in communion with the objects from with language originates and voices their feelings in a more immediate, forceful way.
W. Wordsworth explains in his preface that S.T. Coleridge and he were trying to leave behind the specialize for formal language of the 1800 century.
He maintains that this poems are experimental attempts to get metrical arrangement a selection of the real language of man in a sense of vivid sensation by man.
Together with other Romantic writers he wanted to draw upon the expressive power of ordinary speech instead of relying automatically upon on artificial "uniquely" poetiquery of using language.
But W.W. will not naively believe that the language of the poetry could ever be a direct imitation of the language by the man all the workers of the field.
He says that the real language of man might be selected by men, that must be fitted to metrical arranged and that it must be taken from man in a vivid sensation.
Real language on one hand and its sensation and transformation by the poets mind and craft with all the others.
What really interest W. and others romantic writers is not nature for its own sake but nature as it affects the human mind and personality.
In a Romantic writers is the relation between the mind and the natural world that is the central focus.
W. definition of poetry confirms the emphases on subjective emotion and personal experience "all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings".
