CHILDREN'S CLUB

  • We are a group of young people who want to help children aged 4 to 10.

  • When do we meet? In the afternoon and on Saturdays.

  • We help children spend their time doing something useful and creative - and not watching TV. Your child can make a lot of friends at the Children's Club.

THE ACTIVITIES:

  • We love help children do creative activities. We do drawing and painting and when necessary we help children do their homework. We plan to do calendars and plant pots this year, two interesting activities that also help children learn about time and season, and about basic biology.

  • We also hope to make simply food. We don't have an oven, so we plan to make sandwiches, salads and simple desserts. This helps children learn about nutrition.

  • We plan to do some sport, expecially team games.

  • We hope to spend at least two hours per week doing drama activities, and at the end of the school year we intend to put a show with the children as stars.

Es.5 pag.83

-Dr Harper are you worried about the popularity of video games with teenagers today?

-A little, yes. If people play video games for just a couple of hours a week, there's no problem. But when they need to play them every day for hours, this is an addiction. It's one thing to like playing them, another to need to play them.

-So what are the signs of an addiction?

-If a person stops going out with friends, this is an important sign. Look for a person who wants to spend a lot of time alone and who likes staying at home all day. Another problem is when a person can't concentrate. Looks for students who stop listening in class, who start getting physically agitated and restless quickly. Obviously their homework and grades generally suffer too.

-What other signs are there?

-People tend eating badly. They try to get away from the table quickly. They don't pay attention when you speak to them and have difficulty to make conversation.

-What do you advise family and friends to do if they suspect an addiction?

-I suggest talking to the person about it, and trying to make them see the problem. If this doesn't work I advise the family to make an appointment with an expert who can evaluate the situation.

As a child I wanted to be a ballet dancer. I was convinced that I had a great talent. My mother told me to keep studying too. She wanted me to be a journalist. I took ballet lessons every day and I used to spend all my money going to the theatre. I thought that studying was a waste of time. One day when I was going to ballet class on the bus, the road was blocked. A TV journalist was interviewing people about a recent accident. I was watching from the bus absolutely fascinated. While I was watching I relised that I didn't want to become a ballet dancer at all. I wanted to become a TV journalist. My mother was delighted.
