Un ecosistema è un habitat, cioè un luogo che secondo le caratteristiche fisiche può permettere a una specie di vivere e svilupparsi, della natura che comprende un insieme di fauna, flora e altri elementi legati fra loro da la catena alimentare. La scienza che studia gli ecosistemi è l'ecologia. L'Integrità, la biodiversità tra altre caratteristiche degli ecosistemi sono messe in pericolo da attività svolte dall'uomo. Lo smog e la caccia indiscriminata da parte dell'uomo sono delle azioni che mettono in prova la resistenza della natura e il riscaldamento globale, la riduzione del habitat e il pericolo di estinzione di molte specie sono delle risposte della natura sulle nostre azioni.

In 1869, a German biologist studied the biological relations of species and around 1925, some other biologists tried to work for the ecology of communities and with the pyramid of species.

The problems with the environment are not new. Many years ago, men destroyed forests to get wood. But the problems of ancient times affect the present, too: different land areas were modified by man's action.
