The extract, that I'm going to analize, is from “Mrs Dalloway” of Virgina Woolf. This book helped the development of the novel with introduction of new narrative techniques; instead here Virginia Woolf wanted to convey through words the nature of human consciouness, so the use of a third person narrator is kept to the minimum and the novel develops through interior monologue (that is a narrative technique in which the narrative point of view is inside a characte's mind and it conveys the process of thoughts of the characters).
In this extract third person narrator is relegated into two lines, where he/she describes what Mrs Dalloway does. Then the description continues with the use of the interior monologue.
The attection of the reader is focus on aspects, that Clarissa considers negative and positive in her personality: she considers negative her knowledge, because she knows nothing; but she considers positive her knowing people by insticts. There are most contradictory aspects in her personality, because she is happy and at the same time she is unhappy. So she begins to think of death, because people, who know her, looks her only for dresses. Nobody know her personality. And maybe she doesn't know herself too.
The interior monologue mixes different techniques here: free direct thought, free indirect thought, third person narrator from inside the character's point of view and direct questions with verbe tense in indirect form.
There are also similes and repetitions (simile: “being laid at like a mist between the people she knew best”; repetition: “ what” and “would not say”), which convey that she doesn't find a place in the world.
