A LETTER FROM JAMES JOYCE TO HIS AMERICAN PUBLISHER

1a -     Where and when Joyce was when he wrote it?

He was in Paris on the 2nd of April in 1932

1b -     Why he wrote it?

I understand the reason why he wrote it when he said " Since you are determined to fight for its legislation in the United States and to publish what will be the only authentic edition there" and  " It is therefore with the greatest sincerity that I wish you all possible success in your courageous venture both as regards the legislation of Ulysses as well as its publication and I willingly hereby that not only will your edition be the only authentic one in United States but also the only one which I will be receiving  royalties."

So Joyce wrote this letter in order to give to the publisher details of the story of the publication of Ulysses and a manuscript: Dubliners. As a matter of fact he had a lot of problems. He was unable to acquire the copyright and all copies of Ulysses were burnt and seized because of the themes.

2 -        Summarize the trials and tribulations of the novel Ulysses as described here by Joyce.

Joyce had a lot of problems in publishing Dubliners in Europe and in America.

Publisher won't to publish anything of Joyce.

No less than twenty- two publisher and printers read the manuscript Dubliners , and when it was printed someone bought out the entire edition and had burnt it in Dublin.

When he came to Paris he had few chances of finding publisher because of the Ulysses' eleventh episode, that create scandal, consequently  the copies were confiscated.

After that Ezra Pound brought him in contact with Miss Sylvia Beach , who worked in a bookshop and took the manuscript and banded it to publishers.

Ulysses was printed on February in 1922.

In a second moment there were a lot of complications in  the United States .

A lot of copies of Ulysses were seized and burnt by the Customs authorities.

Joyce was unable to acquire the copyright .

Unscrupulous person printed Ulysses and sold it clandestinely, but he obtained an injunction against this person.
