I’m going to analyze “Molly’s Final Monologue”, which is taken from James Joyce’s Ulysses.
In this extract the writer presents us Marion Bloom, and he makes her characterization through her reflections.
In fact she is in her bedroom, at night; she is in bed totally relaxed and she thinks about some factors and considerations, for example she thinks about people in China, about flowers, about nature, about religious and about her past, especially she remembers a long kiss between her and Leopold, who is her husband.
Therefore the clever reader can understand that Joyce adopts the technique of Interior Monologue: he or she has go the impression to be in Molly’s mind.
Particularly the absence of punctuation, that makes very difficult the reading, contributes to give the idea of thoughts.
