LADY DIAMOND
Lady Diamond is an anonymous ballad. It is in 52 lines and it tells about the king's daughter. She fell in love with a kitchen boy. When her father discovered that she was pregnant, he wanted to know the father and when he knew it he murdered him. At the end the king gave her love's heart to Lady Diamond and then she died.
The text, as most of ballads, is about love and it has a tragic end. The story talks about everyday life where people feel in love and at the end they suffer for it.
Characters aren't described but we can read only the name or know about their role and there is a lot of space for the narration of the story.
It is written in regular four-line stanzas rhyming abab and there is a lot of repetition to help memorization. You can find a lot of alliteration, consonance and assonance in evert line.
