In the first ten lines of "the closet scene" Hamlet shows Gertrude a portrait, in which is painted king Hamlet and Claudius. First the prince invites her mother to look at it and then he describes all his father qualities. He underlines that even if the two people in the picture are brothers, they are quite different. Then he describes his father by using references to classic mythological language, to compare him to a god. He starts from the brow, a word of high register, as device for refer to his grace. In fact it is one of the noblest part of the human body. He uses the words "Hyperion curls" to focus on his magnitude again, because Hyperion was one of the classical gods and in the Middle-ages someone who had curls was considered as a wise person. In the further line is named Mars, the god of war, because Hamlet wants to say that the old king had abilities in war too, the qualities of a leader and was able to make a crucial decision as well. In conclusion he compares him to Mercury, by using not a metaphor, but a similitude. Mercury was the god mouth's speaker and so is device for intelligence and Hamlet makes the reader imagine a sunbeam, that light up a hill. It is like intelligence lighting up ignorance. In fact he magnifies the figure of the father, who can be considered as a model for everybody.
