Ulysses is a poem written in 1833 by Lord Alfred Tennyson. It is a dramatic monologue typical form of poetry in Victorian period. In this monologue the poet uses Ulysses a classic hero to analyse Victorian mentality. Tennyson’s Ulysses is an old man and he comes back in Ithaca, he is the dramatis personae of the monologue. Ulysses, an idle king, does not appreciate his people “that hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me”. In the poem is evident the contrast whether is more important richness or personal qualities like courage or virtue. Ulysses and his son Telemachus represent this contrast between romantic and Victorian visions of life. Ulysses thinks during the life a man should “follow knowledge like a sinking star” and not to look for wealth. Telemachus is the Victorian age man, he is “centred in the sphere of common duties, decent not to fail”
