TO HIS COY MISTRESS-LINES 15-35
He defines his love like a vegetable because he wants to underline its genuineness and its naturalness. It should grow strong like an empire and slowly. He uses hyperboles to highlight irony and has the function of criticizing the woman's coyness. He says that he needs 100 years to see her eyes and see her forehead, two hundred to adore each breast and thirty thousand to the rest and an age to every part of her body and the last age she should her heart. This makes the reader understand that the lady is impossible to conquer because of her coyness. Than he continues with an ironical statement: ‘For , lady, you deserve this state, nor would I love at lower rate.' The poet wants to focus the attention on the devotion that the woman wants to have and he says that she deserve all his esteem.
‘But at my back I always hear time's winged chariot hurrying near.' This statement underlines that the poet can't stop the time which is always running by, the poet choices ‘winged chariot' because birds are full of energy, free, they are raptors like his love for his lover. And he is afraid of the vast eternity symbolized by the deserts. The poet doesn't agree with coyness because it's a waste of time which is always too little. To focus on this believe Marvell says that her beauty can't be more found neither in her marble vault. He uses marble because he thinks that she is rich and she let have an expensive vault.
