Activities
1) The actions performed by Captain Crawley convey to the reader a melancholic feelings because he is aware of he will not return home. He notes his last wills and he waves Rebecca dramatically conveying his tender feelings towards the woman.
2) After he husband departure, Rebecca is worried about her look ; she cares only about herself and her physical aspect. She appears indifferent about the Captain Crawley's leaving : she sleeps very comfortably and she lives her everyday life without preoccupations. Rebecca seems to be a superficial and devoid of feelings because she is obsessed about appearance and she not give way to sentimentality. In addition she appears like an avid woman who calculates her marriage to accumulate wealth.
3) The reader impression of Rebecca's character is confirmed.
4) Thackeray provides the reader with a portrait of Rebecca character so his judgments are implied. The reader forms opinions on the character through narrator's filter. Narrator gives a negative connotation about Rebecca and her words conveying his disposition to the reader.
