Learning Path » 5B Interacting
Activities:
1)Captain Crawley is worried about his wife who is leaving behind. He is even more worried about her condition than about himself who is going off to battle and he could die. For this reason he leaves a list of all the things that Rebecca could sell for her benefit. He is deeply in love with Rebecca and he suffers a lot when he is about to leave
2)Rebecca seems more worried about her aspect than his husband's departure: she makes comments about her dress and her face. She only thinks about all the things that Captain Crawley has left to her. Rebecca is a superficial and materialist girl who doesn't seem to have any feeling.
3)Yes, the impression of Rebecca's character is confirmed. Even if the narrator calls her "an heroine" the character doesn't seem to be so. She is a calculating woman and she is unscrupulous. She isn't a good heroine at all.
4) Thackeray characterizes his characters by describing their actions and thoughts. The narrator also gives some personal comments that make the reader confirm the idea he has had about the character before: he is free to judge the characters' behaviors but he is influenced by the narrator's comments. Thackeray ironically expresses his disappointment by calling Rebecca an "heroine", after all she has done to increase her own benefit. He has a negative opinion about her and her world.
