1) For the captain Crawley is very painful to abandon his wife because he loves too much even if she doesn't deserve it, he only wants her own benefit and have an happy future with her. The reader understands the importance that the captain gives to his wife when he leaves her and "he took her up from the ground, and held her in his arms for a minute, tight pressed against his strong.beating heart".

2) On the basis of her behaviour, it's evident that Rebecca is not interested about his. Through the line "And Rebecca wisely determined not to give way to unavailing sentimentality on her husband's departure" the reader can understand that Rebecca is a cold wife she does not return the same love that she receives by her husband and also she thinks only of herself for example she is only careful to her physical aspect.

3) The reader at the end of the story confirms a notion that had previously done with regard to the personality of Rebecca, indeed she presents herself like a calculating woman and she doesn't love really her husband, but she is merried with him only for interest.

4) Thackery is an omniscient narrator, he tells the story without any comments and
the reader is not free to form opinions on the characters because this is already expressed by the narrator at the end of the story.
