Up to  4A Metaphysical Poetry and John DonneUp to task document list

1.      Illustrate the main features of Metaphysical Poetry

Metaphysical poetry is characterized by the use of unusual words and metaphors to describe physical and passionate love. The words are from the semantic fields of geography, science, geology, alchemy and music. The most important aspect of metaphysical poetry was wit, the use of unusual metaphors, and conceits. Word come together but they are from different semantic fields. They were appreciate by the 20th century poets especially by Eliot, but the contemporary poets had a negative idea of them because they found it difficult to understand their poems.

2.      Discuss the message of J. Donne’s A Valediction Forbidding Mourning

The poet wants to describe spiritual love, which is more important than the physical one because it never ends and even if two lovers are far away they are still together. They are like a compass the foot of which even if are far away draw a circle, the perfect geometrical form. Spiritual love lasts forever and I think it is very difficult to find one, because human beings prefer physical love. Love should be “inter-assured of the mind”, that is both physical and spiritual.

3.      Illustrate the causes of the Civil  War in England

Charles ascended the throne in 1625 and he believed that the king has a divine right to be a sovereign. He wanted an absolute monarchy and he wanted to reduce the Parliament’s power. In 1628 he censed taxation without the approval of the Parliament, and rejected the Petition of Rights about the Parliament’s power and laws. In 1640 the Parliament divided into two groups: the house of Lords formed the Parliamentary Army which started the civil war in contrast with the Commons who represented the revolutionary side.
