Vanity Fair chapter XXX

Activities

1. Capitan Crowley is worried about his wife's future in case any accident should befall him. From his behaviour I could understand he is really in love with his wife and he wants to take care of her.

2. Rebecca seems worried about her physical aspect, she does not think about his husband's departure, rather she is checking all the things are left. She looks like a materialist and selfish woman who takes care just of herself.

3. My impression of Rebecca's character is confirmed. She spends the day considering all the properties and jewels are left and calculating their value.

4. Thackeray's characters come to life through their actions and thoughts. However the reader is not completely free to judge the characters because the narrator's comments influenced his vision. The narrator criticizes Rebecca and her way of acting, indeed he calls her ironically an "heroine", but at the same time he seems to appreciate her presence of mind and self assured.
