W. M. Thackeray - Vanity Fair
Chapter XXX
"The girl I left behind me"
1. Captain Crawley feels love for his wife. He wants her to have an happy future, with or without him. Through the line "He took her up from the ground, and held her in his arms for a minute, tight pressed against his strong-beating heart" the reader can understand that the man is very worried and he doesn't want to leave her.
2. On the basis of her behaviour I think that Rebecca is not interested about his husband. Through the line "And Rebecca wisely determined not to give way to unavailing sentimentality on her husband's departure" the reader can understand that Rebecca is a cold wife and she doesn't return the love of his husband. Then she thinks only to her physical aspect.
3. My impression of Rebecca's is confirmed in the end of the story. She presents herself like a calculating woman and she doesn't love her husband, but she is merried with him only for interest.
4. Thackeray is an omniscient narrator: he tells the story without any comments.
The reader is not free to form opinions on the characters, because the narrator in the end of the story give an opinion of two characters.
