POLITICS: After the death of Elizabeth I, James I ascended the throne . He belonged to the dinasty of Stuarts. The new king believed in divine power and he was responsabile of any earthly power. That increased the hostility between the king and Parliament.
LITERATURE: During this new period the main themes of poetry were God, religion, the Universe and love but in a different and revolutionary view.Metaphysical poets were poets that used strong and unusual images to highlight the concept of love.
JOHN MILTON:
John Milton was a public servant that sided with Parliament. John Milton's most famous work is Paradise Lost which is an epic poem written in blank verses ( a blank verse is a iambic pentameter without rhymes).The hero of Paradise lost is the lost archangel, Satan. He lost paradise because rebelled to God , he wanted his power. John Milton's work tells about men's free will, men's disobedience and passions. Milton wants the reader understand that every human has to be rational and use his brain.
