When James I became the king of England, the relation between monarch and Parliament became more strained. The tensions reached their peak with the suspension of Parliament under Charles I and his execution in 1649. The king had to give count of his judgement only to Gos.

 

Literature

In this period literature in all its forms was characterized by sharp contrasts.

 

Science

The 17th century was a period of fermt in the field of science. New approaches to science were advocated.

 

Milton and Paradise Lost

Milton is one of the major figures of English Literature, a supporter of the ideals of freedom and Republicanism.

Paradise Lost is an epic poem about Heaven, Hell, primordial Chaos, the Creation of the world and Adam and Eve's drama of temptations and fall.

The main characters have to take difficult choices under the pressure of strong desires and temptations.

Milton built Paradise Lost on stories and myths taken from the Bible. Paradise Lost deals with the destiny of human race, and explores issues such as knowledge and choice.
