After that James I came to the throne, tensions between monarch and Parliament exacerbated. As a consequence of them, a civil war begun and in 1649 the king Charles I (who suspended the Parliament)was executed.

LITERATURE:
 
Literature was influenced by controversies. Therefore it was characterized by sharp contrasts.

SCIENCE:
 

During 17th century views of the world were reshaped and there were new approaches to science.


JOHN MILTON AND PARADISE LOST:
 

John Milton is one of the best known English poet. His most famous work are:
-Areopagitica: a tract about freedom of press and intellectual liberty
-Paradise Lost: written almost 20 years later. It is an epic poem about Adam and Eve's fall into Hell. They are tempted by desires.

The poem has references to Bible and Ovid's Metamorphoses and it investigated the destiny of human race, knowledge and choice.
