Up to  4A Metaphysical Poetry and John DonneUp to task document list

1.Illustrate the main features of Metaphysical Poetry.

Metaphysical poets wrote about religion and love using and argumentative structure, they wanted to surprise the reader and so they used irony, serious reflection, unusual images, language rich in intellectualism but also violent and, above all, they used unexpected metaphors from different sources. Through these metaphors they examined the relationship between God, the individual and the universe. Metaphysical school differed in two ways from the others:  1.The insistence on an elaborate style and the search for unusual. 2. The intellectualism of the poet work.

2.Discuss the message of J. Donne’s  A Valediction Forbidding Mourning.

In the poem J. Donne invited his woman not to cry even if he is going to leave. The question of this poem is the separation of two lovers and this could be a problem especially for lovers who are only united by sensual love. Donne and his lady, vice versa , share a love which is metaphysical and so their souls are more united and their love cannot be broken but it become stronger and stronger. They are compared to the legs of a compass: even if they are far away they are always spiritually united.

    3. Illustrate the causes of the Civil War in England.

The Civil War in England broke out in 1642 because of people hostility towards the king. Indeed the king, Charles II, ruled the country as an absolute monarch, he imposed taxes without the consent of the Parliament and he asked for its help only when he had to raise money. So in 1628 the Parliament presented “Petition of Rights” in which two were the most important points:1. No taxes should be levied without Parliament’s approval; 2. No one should be imprisoned except on a formal and justifiable charge. During the Civil War people were divided into ROYALISTS (Catholics and aristocracy) and PARLIAMENT (professional and mercantile classes).
