After the death of Elizabeth , the English throne passed into the hands of James I . He believed in the  divine right of the king and he considered himself not responsible of any earthly power. That aroused the hostility of Parliament towards the monarchy.James I died in 1625 and the throne passed into the hands of his son, Charles I who shared his father’s convinctions. During the reign of Charles I there were a lot of religious differences; The Anglicans practised the religion of the church of England, there were Chatolics, Non conformists and dissenters. Puritans were a branch of dissenters and they beacame the leader of the opposition of the crown.

In 1625 the king imposed taxation  without Parlamentary consent. In 1628 the Parliament made the Petition of Rights that consisted of two most important points:

1)      No taxation should be levied without the consent of the Parliament

2)      No one should be imprisoned without a charge.

In 1640 the king asked the Parliament for money fpr his campaign against the Scots but the Parliament refused the king’s request. In 1642 was created a Parlamentary Army and Civil War broke out. There were to opposite sides : Royalists that sided with the king and  people who stayed with Cromwell the leader of the Parliamentary army. The Parliament won and the king was executed in 1649. A rebublic was instituted but when Oliver Cromwell died no one seemed to be willig to succed him so in 1660 starts the Restpration
