SUMMERY FROM PAGE 172 TO 176 - THE 17 th CENTURY

POLITICS: After the death of Elisabeth I, James I came to the throne. He belonged to the Stuarts dynasty and he believed that the king was a God minister. This brought to a rising of the tensions between the king and the Parliament; which brought to the execution of Charles I in 1649.

LITERATURE: Literature of this period is characterized by sharp contrasts and a new vision of God and religion. But above all we find a new idea of love. Metaphysical poets exalt passions and sensuality.

SCIENCE: In this period we have a new approach to science. New discoveries brought to new questions which reshaped previous certainties.

JOHN MILTON: Paradise Lost: Milton was one of the most important figures in English literature. He was a puritan, a supporter of intellectual liberty. His most important poem is Paradise Lost, an epic poem in blank verse. It is about Heaven, Hell, Creation and Adam and Eve's drama of temptation. The most relevant character is Satan by which Milton underlines his belief in man's passions and his free will.
