Robinson Crusoe and Friday
From line 1 to line 15 the poet describes Friday’s physical features in order to create a very clear image of the character in the reader’s mind. Defoe uses a lot of adjectives in order to be accurated and detailed. There are a lot of alliterations “straight strong limbs”, “sweetness softness” “ sparkling sharpness”. The repetition of sound “s” conveys a sense of silence and calmness while the sound “r” expresses Friday’s strenght . Defoe uses these repetitions in order to make the reader understand that Friday is humble, calm and quiet but also strong. Punctuation is also very important because the reader can focus his attention on the most important features. After Friday’s characterisation Defoe describes his attitude and his actions in contrast with Robison’s Crusoe attitude to him. The poet uses the words “ subjection, servitude and submission” in order to focus the reader’s attention on Friday’s attitude towards Robinson Crusoe. The prefix “sub” underlines the inferior condition of the indigenous character, he is like a slave and he considers Crusoe a divinity as a consequence the poet uses the word “Master” in order to highlight Robinson Crusoe’s superiority.
