POLITICS: After the death of Elizabeth I, James I ascended the throne . He belonged to the dinasty of Stuarts. The new king believed in the divine right of monarchs. That increased the hostility between the king and Parliament. the situation between the Parliament and the monarchy got worse.
LITERATURE: The literature was influenced by this period. During this period the main themes of poetry were God, religion, the Universe and love but in a different and revolutionary view. It was born the metaphysical idea of love. in this idea love is mada of passion and sensuality too. Metaphysical poets were poets that used strong and unusual images to highlight this.
JOHN MILTON:
John Milton was one of the most important metaphysical poet. He lived in the second half of the 17th century. John Milton's most famous poem is Paradise Lost which is an epic poem written in blank verses ( a blank verse is a iambic pentameter without rhymes). It is an epic poem because it tells about the deeds of a hero : the lost archangel, Satan. He lost paradise because rebelled to God , he wanted his power. This poem is the perfect expression of Puritanism religion(they want to go back a poor relationship between God and humanism). John Milton's work tells about men's free will, men's first disobedience to God. Human being lost Paradise and they became mortal. This is a poem about Heaven, Hell, creation and Adam and Eve's fall. The stories are about situations taken from the Bible: they focus on difficult choices and temptation.
