I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
The curiosity that suggests the reader is to find out, why the speaking voice is walking without a definitive direction and last but not least, why he moves alone and where. The poem is set in the countryside and tells about a poet’s experience. The text consists of four stanzas of six lines. The poet was walking around the countryside when suddenly, he saw a field of daffodils. He lived a visual experience: the flowers were so many and he was alone. They were near a lack and were moved by the wind. He stopped and look at the scene in admiration, because the daffodils in front of his eyes where moving as if they were dancing. In the first stanza and in the second, the poet describes the emotion to see a multitude of flowers moving as the wind touches them using some figures of speech like “ as the stars that shine” and “tossing their heads in sprightly dance”. The simile convey the idea of the bright yellow colour of daffodils and their numerous . The metaphor ,instead of, provides a personification in their action, that are typical of man. In the third stanza the poet represent the movement of the daffodils like the waves and this imagine communicates a sense of harmony and felicity. The repetition of the verbs “ I gazed” empathies the idea of beauty of flowers that captures the poet’s attention, who could not think about the wealth the show would bring to him. In the last stanza the poet explains what happened to him when he was lying on his sofa and he remembered his experience in the country. The “l” sounds and the “e” vowels sounds suggest a sense of peace and musicality, like the reproduction of the sounds of the wind, which moves the daffodils in an echo effects. Important is also the verbs tense that in the first part are in the past and in the second part are in the present created a link between the poet’s emotion and his present.
