For his 18^th birthday Roddie Lewis'a parents gave him an unusual birthday present: a course in First Aid. Roddie is interested in medicine and hopes to become a doctor. He has been studying science and mathematics at school for several years, but hadn't studied any pratical medical subjects. Roddie is now the youngest person in our county to work with the medical volunteers who assist ambulance personnel. Hehas been working for 4 months. "While assisting the experts, I had helped to observe and learn," says Roddie. " before I started this job, I hadn't seen a heart attack or an injury except in books and films and I hasn't been seen a sick person. Now I feel confident I can assist people in emergencies". "We had never helped with Roddie for several months," said Derek Gilliam, professional ambulance paramedic," and although he hadn't any experience before he started, he is very enthusiastic and quick, and had learnt a lot. He has the qualities of an excellent doctor". Roddie takes his final school exams later this year, and hopes to win a place at medical school.
