For his 18th birthday Roddie Lewis's parents gave him an unusual birthday present: a course in First Aid. Roddie is interested in medicine and hopes to become a doctor. He has been studying science and mathematics at school for several years, but he hasn't studied any practical medical subjects.
Roddie is now the youngest person in our country to work with the medical volunteers who assist ambulance personnel. He has been helping for 4 months. "While assisting the experts, I try to observe and learn", says Roddie. "Before I started this job I hadn't see a heart attack or an injury except in books and films and I had never helped a sick person. Now I feel confident I can assist people in emergencies."
"We're been working with Roddie for several months", said Derek Gilliam, professional ambulance paramedic, "and although he hadn't had any experience before he started, he is very enthusiastic and quick, and learns a lot. He has the qualities of an excellent doctor." Roddie takes his final school exams later this year, and hopes to win a place at medical school.
