“Possession” in the title of the Romance, written by A.S Byatt.
The word is considered as a negative term, because it refers to a particular relationship characterized by a sort of dependence.
The title, in this case, is connected to the text because, in the text, there are some relationship of this type:

Maud Bailey and Roland Michell’ s possession towards their research; in detail, Maud is conditioned on Christabel La Motte’s model, and on the other side Roland is obsessed by the Victorian poet, Randolph Henry Ash.

Other researchers, such as Mortimer Cropper, Fergus Wolff, Blackadder, Beatrice Nest and Leonora Stern are attracted by this possession of the truth. But, among them there are also who is obsessed by the profit that they obtain by this research.

Another form of Possession is demonstrated by Sir Randolph Henry Ash towards Miss Christabel La Motte. In fact Ash has a strong attachment to Christabel, even if he loves his wife, Ellen Ash.

On the other side, there is Blanche Glover, who is Christabel’s partner. She is very tormented about the feeling that she proves towards Christabel; and so, she arrived to kill herself when she discovered the relationship between Christabel and Sir Ash.
