GUESTS FOR DINNER

At quarter to six Mrs. Alison heard her husband come home from work and park his car outside the house. She got out of the house to speak to him. He noticed she was sad, and asked her why she looked so upset. The wife said she had made a terrible mistake, so Mr. Alison wanted to know what it was. She told him Mrs. Johnson had rung up half an hour before; they had got talking and she had invited her for that day’s dinner. The husband interrupted her and said it was OK, because they hadn’t seen the Johnsons for ages. She replied that she had realized later they hadn’t have enough food for them. After that, she said she had told him to buy some steak on the way from work three days before. He reminded this suddenly, and told her he had bought it. But he had forgotten it in the boot of his car.
