The Anglo-Saxons were Germanic tribes that came from Northern Europe and during the 5th and 6th centuries they invaded Britain,which was under the Roman control.Their society was based on a chief or king,who ruled as a military leader, then came the "earls" and "thegns" (both nobles) and finally the other people,called "freemen.At first people lived in country village where the farmland was owned communally,but in the 8th and 9th centuries they started to found some towns,and exactly Winchester,York,Southampton,Norwich and London.Anglo-Saxons spoke a Germanic language,called Old English and their culture was an oral one but from the end of the 6th century the influence of Christianity introduced the writing of documents and also united the kingdom.
