“The Anglo-Saxons (Late 4th C.-1066)”
The Germanic tribes invaded Britain in the 5th and 6th century; the society was ruled by a chief or a king and they lived in country village where the farmland, woods, pastures and meadows were owned communally. Within towns it began to form larger communities called “Boroughs” and they were founded as military bases. Anglo-Saxons founded different towns like Winchester, Norwich, York, Southampton and London. The language, that was used, was old English and there were an oral culture. The influence of Christianity proved a driving force in uniting the kingdom and in opening the country to the influence of Europe.
