Up to  5 B. Romanticism. First Generation. S. T. Coleridge. Theory and PracticeUp to task document list

Exercise 1)
a.
-During his wedding-feast, an old man meets three young men and he stops one of these. While they speaking, the old man starts to tell his  story.

-The sailor tells about his travel which it was in South Pole. It started well.

-The old man's story continues and he tells that a storm hits his boat.

-The sailor tells also that an albatros comes there trough the fog and it is well regarded by sailors.

-The sailors think that this albatros brings good luck to them, but the oldest sailor kills it.

b)
In this part there is only one storylines: it is set in the past of the sailor and tells about his travel.

Exercise 2)
a)
His portait is not very detailed. Coleridge does not use many traits to describe the sailor. He tells about the old man's grey beard and his eyes.

b)
This man can be considered a typical characters of the Romantic time, so this sailor is not very realistic.

Exercise 3)
a)
The travel stars with the sun in the sky, then Coleridge draws the attentions of the reader about the boat in storm and the setting becomes dark and stormy.

b)
The storm is the only element that it is personified. Coleridge describes it like a strong and powerful person. Something to fear.

c)
In this first parte, nature is used in a simbolic way by Coleridge.

Exercise 4)
b)
In my opinion the parts where there is a strong contrast is when the albatros comes in the scene. In fact, it helps the sailors and it rescues them. The albatros represent freedom.
