The sonnet form
The sonnet is a lyrical form of poetry. It entered into England during the Renaissance, one century later than Europe.
When the sonnet came into England, the first step the sonnetters did, they translated Petrarch's sonnets. But the two languages have a different way to create rhythm so the meters were different and a transformation of the sonnet structure was necessary. In English the rhythm is determinated by the alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables, in Italian is given by the number of syllables
Petrarch is the best known Italian sonnetteer and his sonnets are composed of an octave: were the poet introduces the problem, and a sestet: were he introduced the possible solution.
The English sonnet is organised into three quatrains, where the problem is posed in three different aspects, in order to stick on the memory of the reader, and a final rhyming couplet in which the poet tries to solve it.
Thomas Wyatt is the English poet that tries to translate the Italian verses into English, but with no success.
