The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner

Exercise 1

<!--Characters: Wedding Guests, ancient Mariner, Albatross

Setting of the ballad: wedding-feast.

Setting of the story of the ancient Mariner: a ship

<!--I can identify two storylines: the wedding and the story told by the Mariner

Exercise 2

The ancient Mariner is an old man; he has a very long gray beard and a glittering eye. He has a skinny handthe reader is only provided some simple information about his physical aspect. In short hid appearance is only sketched. I think the old man is a real figure.

Sea, church, hills, the sun,

b)storm, fog, snow

c)good south wind, white moon shine

The storm is tyrannous and strong like a man.

The ice cracked and growled, roared and howled

The Albatross is like a Christian soul

In the description of the storm Nature is described in a realistic way, differently from the other descriptions where Coleridge uses lots of unreal images.

Exercise 4

In my opinion the reader can see the most important contrast between reality and supernatural when the ancient Mariner holds the wedding-guest with his skinny hand.
