Up to  Postmodernism and PossessionUp to task document list

ü  The film shows Ash's house, The British Museum, London Library, Maud's house, Maud's car, Lincolnshire (Sir George Bailey's house, LaMotte's grave), Lincoln University, Yorkshire, Hodershall (cemetery).

ü  The naive reader comes across literary institutions: the British Museum, Libraries, Centre of research, Academies.

ü  The role of academy comes into play through research and the study of documents by academic characters.

ü  Documents and letters come to the forefront casually at the start but then they are discovered by following the clues found in the previous documents.

ü  Victorian and modern London are mostly presented through inner settings. The director focuses his camera on the rooms where the most important events take place.

ü  The different ideas of possession are conveyed by words and different situation that happen between characters and documents.

ü  Literary erudition is shown in the film through dialogues between characters, through the pages of letters, essays and books and through classic music.

ü  The characterization of the four protagonists are created through their actions, movements, expressions, dialogues and physical aspect

ü  The director shows the bond developing between Maud and Roland parallel and contemporary to the love story between Ash and LaMotte.

ü  The juxtaposition of present and past is developed through montage (alternative sequences), flashback and panoramic effects.

There are some differences between the novel and the film. The movie is shorter, there aren’t Val, Leonora Stern,  Beatrice Nest etc.. , it shows the scenes in sequence without stopping on the novel descriptions. In the movie  the plot is more immediately and easier because many  parts have been cut but the story line is rigidly respected.  In addition the film uses also images, music and sounds that in the novel only the reader can imagine.

The two love stories develop at the same time. There is a juxtaposition between the love story of the two Victorian poets and the two researchers.

The past is important because the story starts right in that time and it is relevant to understand the present because through the love story of the poets you can better grasp the present relationship between the researchers.

The characterization is built up through actions, movements, expressions and dialogues.

The

Characters face life with tenacity and ambition bacause they are very busy to reach their objectives. On the other side they are totally caught by a passion that they cannot manage.

The performance of actors is good, they are able to communicate emotions and feelings rendering the novel atmosphere with detailed and coherent effects.

The message the film director wants to convey is to find the truth and to transmitted passionate feeling. On the other side the novel's message is more connected to the  consciousness of the presence of more truths, the novel is based on post-modern theories.

The idea of Post-modernity comes to surface through the event and thoughts of some characters.

The movie is well done although easier and shorter. There aren’t the subplot that are presented in the novel therefore the film doesn’t convey all the different kind of message, ideas and theories that characterize the book.
