Learning Path » 5A Interacting
After watching the film you can find some differences from the novel:
In the movie there isn't absolute adherence with plot because some characters which are present in the novel , in the movie don't appear ,for esample Leonora and Val. Moreover the absolute adherence is impossible to represent in a movie because it lasts about 2 hour insted the novel has 510 page and the narrator has more space to describe meticulously the events.
The movie seems to be a detective story and the spectator isn't able to find the importance of literature and poetry, only in some scenes for example when Moud recites some verse of Christabel about a doll to find the letters. Instead in the novel the importance of poetry is evident , almost chapter begins with an extract of some work of Christabel and Ash.
The love stories are parallels , the pass is reflected in the present : the relationship between the two scholars remembers the early phase of Ash and LaMotte's love. In his early letters Randolph, who felt a strong interest in Christabel, tried to draw her out of her voluntary reclusion; Christabel on her part wrote with a kind coldness, and was altogether reluctant to engage in a relationship. The same applies now: whereas Maud is completely absorbed in her task, Roland's attention is divided between her and the texts, and he is also always
the one to initiate conversations .
The pass is reflected in the present and it is more relevant because through it the spectator undestand better the ralation between Moud and Roland , and the pass is the base of the film because the story begins with the finding of two letter of Ash , a Victorian poet.
The characterization of the characters is a " chain" , the specator can understand the behaviours of characters making a parallelism between the characters of pass and present. The characters change in front of a differents situations . the film is a film formation , the spectator comes to know the characters really at the end of the film.
Love in the past seems modern. initially it is based on mental love and subsequently on physical love, there is more passionate while that of today, although he had few constraints, it is more neurotic and the characters, Moud and Roland thinks too much losting passion.
Christabel and Moud in appearance don't seems passionate but they have a "mona lisa" smile , a mysterious smile instead male characters, Ash and Roland are passionate and it is evident. Through Ash's letters the spectator find his elegance and his passion towards Christabel. Ash and Roland look their beloved with eyes full of passion .
All actors perfeclty embody the characters and respect the plot of the novel.
The message of the film is to try to find the true meaning of love that in this word, in this reality , it is vanishing.
Similar is the message of the novel: the meaning of love is to rediscover but also in the text emerges the importance of literature and poetry in all time and how the true is impossible to know really.
Chracters are ready to sacrifice every moral principle for knowing the truth. The truth in the movie consist on the research of Moud and Roland (The possible connection between Christabel and Ash ) and the research of their self.
The idea of Postmodernity comes to surface through the fragmentation in the narration of the events and through the concept that no one can know the truth .
the movie is beautiful but there is too much control. The protagonist are static and their dialogue are short and I remember only their look and their smile. They are sometimes rational and don't completely live love.
