The main-character, Beowulf,  is the strongest man on earth, fearless, high-born and powerfull. Besides, he is dear to the other warriors and is their leader. As a consequence, he becomes an example for the  Anglo-Saxon warriors, because he is an hero and embodies/personifies all the most important values of Anglo-Saxon society.

The setting of the manuscript is realistic: first of all, the reader can note the quotation of "the swan's road", because during the Middle Ages most of the trade and naval routs were named like animals or goods; then, the description of cliffs enlighted by the sun, deep crags and large promontories is typical of the coasts of Sweden and Denmark.

Indeed, the Anglo-Saxons took numerous voyages in the North of Europe and knew all the places quote very well.

Analysing "Beowulf", we get also information about voyages in the Middle Ages: the Anglo-Saxons sailed using  wood-weathered ships with vessel and gangplank.
