Beowulf is a warrior who can be considered the ideal incarnation of Anglo-Saxon values for some reasons: first of all,he is said to be the mightiest man at his time and high-born but especially a fearless man. These are very important qualities, because the Anglo-Saxon civilization was mainly based on hunting and fighting.Indeed,in the extract it is said that he has ordered a boat to go to Heorot(in Northeast Denmark). So this focuses the reader's attention on another common Anglo-Saxon activity, that is sailing, and it implies that they had to know very well how Northern Europe was.In a second time, the text adds that Beowulf is dear to the other warriors,so they consider him like their leader. This is an important aspect of Anglo-Saxon culture, because the bond between the chief and his warriors was viewed as extreme and also sacred. That's why to abandon the chief was consider a terrible transgression, and the culprit had been certainly gone against several punishments.

Reading the text,a contemporary reader is able to find out the main features of Anglo-Saxon culture, that is a war-like society with a strong military organisation, based on a high sense of courage and honour and absolute fidelity to the chief. He can also notice that his society is based on different values, which vary from person to person, while the Anglo-Saxon one is based on fixed values, and all the people had to respect them. This is an unifying feature of Anglo-Saxon civilization.
