Pros and cons

 

The internet is probably one of the most important inventions of the last 30 years.

At the beginning it was used for military or research targets, but it had been used more and more by people.

The main progresses of Internet have been made with the invention of the “World Wide Web” (www) and the first search engine “yahoo” which have enlarged the use by the people.

But let’s not enlarge on the history but let’s talk about the pros and cons.

 

Talking about the pros, there are a lot of features which have improved our lifestyles.

If we have a doubt we can simply write a question on our favourite search engine and we immediately find thousands of web pages that talk about our problem, these pages may be forums or websites where you can write a question and some other people answer you.

 

We can speak to a friend who lives far away from us using programs like “skype” to talk, our e-mail to write and “messenger” to do both of them and see him. Obviously you need a webcam, a microphone and a pair of headphones to do this.

But this is not all, with our e-mail account we can even send files containing, for example, texts, pictures, songs, videos or small games; it has never been so simple sharing things with your friends or workmates, and it’s still more simple to get an e-mail account. You have only to choose an e-mail client, insert your personal details and your account name and you can start to join the internet communications.

 

Internet makes possible to connect our computers to the website of the company, which has made them, to get updates and improve them, and this happens with almost every one of our computer programs.

 

Internet has seen the birth of thousands of websites that sell every kind of things, from CDs to scooters’ engines; so Internet has opened new profit horizons and at the moment there is a cut-throat race to open new companies’ websites and get new customers. But Internet may give good business not only to the big companies, but even to a single person, for example you can earn money putting on your own website advertisings, but it depends by the amount of your website visitors and how many people click on the advertising links. You can also invest money, for example, on a far away country company.

Famous is the website “e-bay” where, like the word let realize, people can sell and buy used things.

 

These are the most important pros, and now I’m going to talk about the cons.

In fact as Internet is used to improve our lifestyles, it is used to do bad things.

This topic is too extensive to write it all here, so I’m going to write only the most important aspects of the risks.

 

Mainly there are some people called hackers who generate virus or want to enter in your computer using Internet. This may create lots of problems to you and your computer. They can block up you it, steal you private information or use it for other targets. This carry damages like loss of money, the hacker with your private information may steal all your money deposit on your loan account, block of your computer, so you have to spend other money to repair it, or the hackers may use it to enter in others computers, for example in the computers of big companies, to cause other damages to them.

 

Internet may even be the place of undesired meetings. In fact surfing on Internet you may meet paedophiles or bullies. The meeting with paedophiles should immediately be reported to your parents or, if it’s necessary, to the police. Instead the more effective behaviour with the bullies is ignoring them. In every case you have to pay attention when you surf on the Internet or when you talk to other people you don’t know.

 

Sometimes Internet may create dependence, in this case the only cure is talk with people who can help you, for example your parents or specialized people.

 

Especially Internet is used to download song, films, games or programs without paying them and so breaking the law.

 

Last but not least, Internet is used to communicate by a lot of people, but among these people may be some prowlers. Someone may use it to organize, for example, a rubbery or it may be used by terrorist with, in this case, a worst ending.

 

So the Internet is a useful tool, it shortens distances and improves our lifestyles, but, like all the things, it may be used for bad targets, so we have to pay attention when we use it.
