WHY I LIKE THE INTERNET: PROS AND CONS
Today the Internet is very important and is an indispensable factor in our life. It has changed the world in only few years. Which are the pros and cons of this technology?
There are lots of pros of the Internet, which have favoured it. First, it can connect people from all over the world in few seconds. Some programs like Skype let you phone or videophone to everywhere through the Internet. You can read news in real time through apposite websites. You can find information about anything in the Net; there are online dictionaries, encyclopedias, specialized sites, documents and books to consult for doing researches or satisfying your curiosity. Moreover, you can do shopping online through auctions or ordinary payments (in websites like eBay). In the working environment, you can communicate with other people through e-mails or videoconferences. Somebody works or attends classes through the Internet too. Besides, you can view maps of your city, your ways or your journeys (using sites like Google Maps). This technology is overcoming the old paper ones. In addition, you can write blogs, take part of forums or register social networks like Facebook and Twitter to chat, to make friends online or to enlarge your knowledge of a certain topic. You can watch or post videos on the Internet too (using sites like YouTube). You can play role play games online (called MMORPGs) and personify a character you created and customized. Then, you can participate to competition online rather than using phone or mail. Finally, you can download gadgets, utilities and free programs for your computer.
However, there are some cons of this technology. For example, some pieces of information you find in Internet may be uncorrected or misleading. In fact, some people make false information spread for amusement. You should go to trustworthy websites to avoid this misdirection. Furthermore, things which are sold through the Internet may be fake. Even in this case you should consult official sites or authorized sellers. Besides, software or files you download from the Internet may contain virus, which damage your PC and make it unserviceable. Therefore, it is convenient to install an antivirus software on your computer.
But there are negative social consequences too, even serious. For instance, bullying has started spreading on social networks. Some people create a profile in behalf of somebody else and spread fake news about him. This fact has happened especially in USA, and has sometimes lead to serious consequences. Besides, sites like YouTube have become a mean of spreading bullying. Indeed, people sometimes post their videos about the acts of bullying they have made and they pride themselves on doing them.
Moreover, in these later years an "Internet dependence" has spread. Some people can't stay disconnected to the social network or to their favourite MMORPG for a long time. In few cases, they connect to the Internet even during the night. Excessive dependences are considered psychology pathologies and must be cured.
Last but not least, the MMORPGs have created a covered business. Indeed, some businessmen of developing countries earn money by selling score to players. They hire thousands of players of developing nations on storing score to sell. These "employees" earn as much money as a labourer.
Though all these risks, the Internet is an incredible technology and, if it is used properly, it is one of the best results of the human intelligence. I like it because I can find a lot of interesting information, useful programs and nice gadgets for my computer and I can gain knowledge about several topics in few clicks.
