Shakespeare and his colleague did not focus on the written text, but only on the staging of the plays. They were published often without the author’s permission and that’s why they were unreliable.These editions are called “bad” and were published in quarto size. In 1623 was published the first complete edition of Shakespeare’s works, also known as the “First Folio” and still today we do not read the originals.We cannot know all the date of the plays as well, we just take into account external and internal evidence. For example they can be mentioned in the Stationers’ Register or they may refere to contemporary historical events; the style could help us too.
