Up to  5 A - Nice Work. Characters and The Novel in PostmodernismUp to task document list
The text I’m going to analyze is an extract from David Lodge’s “Nice Work”, written in 1982. The first part has an introductory function: the intrusive narrator acquaints a new character. The characterization is made up by character’s thoughts. The narrator does not describe the personage towards her physical features; he explains instead her nature toward her thoughts in the matter of concept of character and the relationship between novel and capitalism. The first piece of information gained by the reader is that the new character does not herself believe in the concept of character. This is told before her name: the reader can imagine that he/she finds him/herself in front of an unconventional character. In a second time the narrator tells the reader the name of the character and her work. Her name is Robin Penrose, and she is a temporary Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Rummidge. Subsequently the narration continues with Robin’s thoughts. She thinks that the rise and the triumph of novel coincide with the rise and the triumph of capitalism and so, the novelist can be considered a capitalist of imagination. So the capitalism produces the novel. Reading this information the reader can understand that Robin Penrose belongs to postmodern thought. Regarding the narrator, the reader comprehends that he finds himself in front of an omniscient and intrusive narrator, who speaks from the 3rd personal point of view.
