OBAMA'S SPEECH ANALYSIS: PART 2
After having showed the disadvantages of Romney's policy for American economy, president Obama makes a specification. He clarifies that he has never said that the path will be easy, thus he has never deceived people stating false visions of easy and immediate projects to resolve the crisis. He says that he has been elected to tell the truth. Furthermore, old and outworn strategies deriving from one's party's legacy are completely useless. Only a common, bold, persistent and experimental effort can help American people to come out of the crisis. As example of this effort, he quotes the situation in the time of Franklin Roosevelt (the great depression and the 2nd World War). Through this paragraph, Obama underlines the people's power of choice between truth and illusion and encourages them to share their efforts to save America. He mentions the example of the crisis in ‘30s and ‘40s to show people that America has survived worse problems and has managed to overcome them and to resurface even stronger. However, this does not mean that the path will be easy and immediate. Also in this paragraph concepts are repeated many times to make them impress in the listeners' mind.
In the next paragraph president Obama declares why he has presented himself again as candidate. Indeed, he wants to solve the problems of America, to reach the objective of restoring the economy with the help of the American people. The paragraph opens with "but", which highlights the shift of tendency in the speech. The adjective "our" implies that the problems concern both the president and common people; this creates unity between speaker and listeners. The metaphor of the path makes the concept more visible and actual, while the words "rally" and "goal" seem to compare America's struggle against the crisis with a challenge to meet and win. The phrase "I'm asking you" creates a parallelism with the one "you elected me" in the previous paragraph: therefore this underlines the interdependence between electors and elected.
In the following paragraph the president delves into the problem of American industry. In particular, he describes the effect of his policy in his first four years of mandate. He has managed to give new life to the auto industry, to bring back some jobs to America and to increase the export of American products in the rest of the world. This is what the president calls "returning to basics", that is the restoration of the best qualities of America, which have been neglected in the previous years. The term "basics" underlines the negligence of the previous governors who did not worry about the most important industry of America. The use of the passive in "was defined" underpins the idea of the dependence from other countries, while the alliteration "bought and borrowed" synthesizes and highlights the mistakes in the past policy.
But in Obama's first mandate an initial solution has been proposed and actuated, and the effects are visible: this explains for the shortness and concreteness of the phrase "we're making things again". Indeed, it implies that the results are visible and true, and the simple sentence underlines their evidence. Besides, the anaphor "I've" underpins the active role Obama had in helping the economy.
In the following paragraph the president further reminds the American people of the new jobs that his policy has created in his previous mandate. He says that it is possible to increase their number even further, if all the American follow the path of the ancient values. The progress needs only the choice to follow them. Here Obama quotes the problem of delocalization of industries, and proposes the solution of rewarding companies that remain in the USA. He supports his argument with quantity data to give more truthfulness to his words (half a million, a million). Besides, through the juxtaposing of "a decade of decline" and "two and half years" he underlines the quick results of his policy. Also the combination of "big factories" and "small businesses" highlights the fact that no company will be neglected. The subject he employs is always "we", to emphasize the community of the effort. Finally, he refers to America with "this country", in order to underpin the progresses America can do if all people work in the proper manner.
In the next paragraph Obama reminds the American of the results derived from the incentive of renewable energy. In particular, he focuses on the independence of America from oil importation and the creation of new jobs. The reason why the president underlines these two results is that they are concrete for the people; in fact, they contribute both to the environment and to the everyday life. Here too he quotes quantity data (we've doubled our use, thousands of Americans, one million barrels) and employs the subject "we".
In the following paragraph, the president underlines people's power of choice between progress (his policy) or regression (his opponent's policy). Besides, he specifies that he too will favor the research of oil and gas in the American territory, as he has made in his previous mandate, but he will not let the industries control the country's whole energy plan. To further refute his opponent's idea, he presents its direct negative consequences (to collect another $4 million in corporate welfare from our taxpayers, to endanger the coastlines) for the population. Here too he highlights both the environmental aspects and the everyday ones of the plan.
In the next paragraph Obama underpins the advantages that will derive from his energy plan in economy. New jobs will be created for all workers (from scientists to farmers), only through the resources of the country (natural ones like gas and biofuels or intellectual ones). The results will be concrete and quick (600,000 new jobs in 2020). Here too he employs quantitative data.
Afterwards, the president adds that his plan will reduce the carbon pollution, and specifies that for him it is not a hoax. There are concrete and visible proofs of its existence (droughts, floods and wildfires). To sensitize public awareness of it, he says that it will be a threat to the future generations.
After that, Obama deepens the question of education. He affirms that every American should have the chance to learn, independently of his age and his money. He emphasizes this problem particularly because he and his wife reached their position thanks to education. Indeed, the self-quotation is used to reinforce the importance education has in his view of the world. The keyword in this paragraph is "gateway", because only through education a country can get better.
In the following paragraph Obama reminds his listeners of the progresses his policy make in the American school system: schools have reached higher levels of teaching, while tuition has become less expensive, because the money which the previous policies spent on banks and loans has been exploited in a better way. He praises also the efforts of the single states, through the statement "every state has answered our call".
Afterwards the president highlights the people's power of choice again; in this case, between an effective school system or a decadent one. To make people more aware, he makes concrete and immediate examples, which describe the real problems of American families. They are highlighted by the anaphor "no..." and the alliteration "crowded classroom, crumbling schools".
In the last paragraph dealing with education, Obama underpins the fact that the goal in education can be reached only through a common effort. Government has only a partial role; the rest derives mainly from the students, but also from teachers, principals and parents. The effort must be common, and this justifies the anaphor of "help me" in the sentences referring to the objectives.
In these paragraphs the concept "you can choose that future" is repeated a lot of times. This underlines the power that people have on the future of the country: indeed, they elect the governors, constitute America and make it go ahead. However, the pronoun "that" implies that the future of success and wealth is still distant; it will not be immediate to reach it, but not impossible.
