Textuality » 4A Interacting
We could divide President Obama’s speech in paragraphs , for analysis purposes.
In the first part there’s the introduction of the speech as every argumentative text. That’s a tribute to all the people who helped him during his politic campaign and he tries to catch the audience approvation by telling them that he too, thinks that campaign , spots and anything related can seem a waste of money, and things could be misunderstood. But immediately, he says that these are the most important elections of this generation, even if campaign may seem false and stupid.
Thus he introduces the other paragraph who’s aim is to approach to all the Americans ( starting by saying them that this is not a simply election) making them proud of being Americans [PRIDE/SUCCESS/INNOVATIVE], remembering what the values are and how America is good in succeed in everything she wants to do, and in every challenge she accepts. In this part we can notice the big use of superlative forms [THE STRONGEST/THE MOST/ THE BEST/ THE LARGEST] that had the aim I’ve already said before. Then, by the repetition of the word EVERYONE he wants to make the audience feel like they are a part of something unique [WALL STREET/MAIN STREET/WASHINGTON]. Because if you imagine to be into a great and a strong group you feel like everything is going to be alright and more protected.
Obama in this part with an American “ wall of fame” gets the listeners more positive to pay attention in what he is going to say immediately.
The second paragraph of the body accounts for how the things are now. There’s a full of progressive forms that reminds the listeners a variation in time of what they were used to see around them. People now are scared and worried about their future prospective thereby now they are completely ready to listen to what is Obama’s policy. This is reinforced by expressions like SHUTTERED STEEL MILL/ PAYCHECKS/GAS/FOOD/LIFE SAVINGS with their concrete meaning draw a clear imagine in people’s minds. But before explaining his policy, he opens a little parenthesis about Romney’s programme with a sarcastic tone who makes him look like a unskilled person for being a President.
Only in the following paragraph he says the truth about his policy: it’s not easy and quick but t will bring a series of important steps that will put America out of this crisis. He refers to Roosevelt who had done great things for the USA and usually in America he’s thought as a wonderful person. Indirectly, Obama mad a comparison between him and Roosevelt. Even if he says that they are going to walk on a difficult path, he always uses unifying words [ COMMON/SHARED/OURS] that stuck in the listener’s minds to make them feel always secure.
Then he introduces a message of hope, saying that everything can be solved and challenges can be met, even if we have to work for this. He closes this paragraph remembering everyone that he’s running for being the President of the United States. Once he had talked in general, he goes into particular dedicating each paragraph to a specific topic that is a point of his political campaign too.
In the first one, he tells the audience his desire to create new job possibilities and bring back good works from overseas. He gives a real example with factories workers. The colon followed by a pause (always remember that’s an oral speech) draw the listener’s attention on what he will do [MAKING THINGS AGAIN]. In the last line he plays on making people responsible of their future, and auto-limitating his power [YOU CAN/YOU CAN].
The fifth paragraph starts in the same way of the previous one ( so that people should remember the sequences and the line runner). But in this case Obama explains his energy’s plans. He refers to the IV paragraph [NEW JOBS] and the III [BETTER PATH], but it’s a sensible theme and thus Obama tries to meet all the tastes of Americans: from oil and fuel to bio and natural forms of energy. He made also another comparison with his rival, saying that his policy won’t move forward America. By using the extended name of the country [UNITED STATES OF AMERICA] he suggests how big and important America is.
In conclusion, Obama achieved in arise approvements identifying with common people, taking over his rival but more than everything, in a very smart way he resorted to the proudest and the sense of belonging of the Americans and the common story line that make them forget about class and money differences.
