The term “Anglo-Saxon” came from the union of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, peoples who invaded Britain in the 5th century.

 

Exercise 2

  • The name “England” was given by Angles, Saxons and Jutes, peoples who invaded Britain in 5th century.

  • The Anglo-Saxon economy was based on agriculture and fishing.

  • Anglo-Saxon values included loyalty, physical courage, personal freedom and beauty.

  • The monk Augustine was a monk sent by Pope Gregory I the Great to bring Christianity back to England. He also was the first monk to go to Canterbury and he became Archbishop of Canterbury.

  • Alfred the Great was the head of the kingdom of Anglo-Saxons, in ca 879. He dreamt an England with local organization, the construction of towns, the issuing of coinage, the making of English law and the promotion of culture.

  • Athelstan was Alfred’s son. In 927, he conquered Northumbria, left by his father Alfred the Great.

  1. I think they are made with some metals (helmet), iron (sword) and gold (shield decorations/ gold buckle).

  2. I find them attractive because they are full of details and they have a strange shape.
