J. Winterson's Memoir.


Jeanette Winterson memoir's Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal is a postmodern novel that deals with the life of the writer. The title introduce the reader into the principal theme of the memoir, but what does it means “Happy”? And what does it means “Normal”? The reader will understeand the meaning of the word “Happy”, according to J. Winterson, only reading the memoir, instead the word “Normal” means “according to the men”. The memoir is dedicated to J. Winterson's mothers: Costance Winterson, who is J. Winterson's adoptive mother, Ruth Rendell, an english writer who in her novels deal with hard characters who feel isolated, and to Ann S who is J. Winterson's biological mother.

The novel consist in 15 chapters, and every chapter has a special function. The novelist deal with her life but she deal with differents universal themes.

The first chapter, “The Wrong Crib”deal with what J. Winterson's adoptive mother used to teel her: C. Winterson frequently told her daughter that she had chosen the wrong crib. With the introduction of the bad character of the mother J. Winterson wants to deal with the function of every mother and the sense of belonging to a family and o a country.

The second chapter “My Advice To Anybody Is Get Born” deal with the description of Manchester and his situation during the Industrial Revolution. The title want to invite people to wake up to ordinariness that you expected and find out who you really are.

The third chapter, “In The Beginning Was The World” deal with the importance of language and the facility of a wrong use of it.

The fourth, the sixth and the eighth chapters deal with religion. Religion and Church had a great importance in the J. Winterson's young life, because her adoptive mother live unhealthily religiosity. J.Winterson doesn't make a criticism to God or to Church.

The ninth chapter is one of the mosts importants: “English Literature A-Z”. In this chapter the novelist deal with the importance of her reading of the novel wich built the personality and the roots of his knowledge about literature even if C. Winterson didn't want her to read it. The importance of her reading underline the importance of English literature and English Writer. In her novel she quotes many importan Writers that helped her to find her personality.
