I completely agree with the statement, and I think that great careers can not happen accidentally.
To tell the truth, somebody could accidentally be given the opportunity to have a very important job, a powerful position in a company or their actual dream job, without any real effort or reason.
But a career is the result of a course of years of work and constant commitment: the first opportunity (which can also be accidental) does not influence the future results of your job and your eventual future career. If you don’t commit yourself you will not get any result, therefore you will probably not even have a career and you will be most likely to be fired.
Great careers are the result either of hard work and commitment or recommendations. In any case, they are based on not accidental facts, and there is no way I can imagine to have great results without doing anything of having somebody to it for you.
