Studying maths is at the core of the Italian debate on learning
Students often complain about studying maths at school, they say:"What will I use it for in real life?". Maths is considered useless because its study is quite detailed and students cannot create relations between studying and real life. However maths has a great importance especially nowadays.
Firstly, maths is very detailed in schools as the Italian "Liceo Scientifico" because students are expected to choose a scientific department after the school. The purpose is to instruct the students as well as possible in order to smooth away the difference between an high school and a university course of studies. However some may argue that a scientific course of studies does not include only maths but even chemistry, biology, medicine and so on. It is right not to think of maths as the most important subject but it is also true that in each scientific subject is required to know at least the fundamental maths concepts.
Secondly, maths has great importance in society nowadays. As our society is based on capitalism, economy has a primary function and it widely relies on maths. So maths is at the base of economy, economy is at the base of capitalism and so of our society. Maths has a great importance from the baker's to a big multinational company. People who do not know maths do not understand how some aspects of our society work and may be even deceived. On the other hand some aspects of maths in an high school are not useful in real life even in an economic field. However dealing with more and more difficult arguments stimulates the student and makes him improve even the basic arguments such as the operations.
To sum up maths has a key position in society and its study is important especially in a "Liceo Scientifico". Anyway maths should not be considered the only important subject since it is not the only scientific subject and a school should not be one-sided but it should offer the students other ways of studying.
